Hardscaping in Kashmir presents unique engineering challenges. The region experiences significant temperature swings — from summer highs above 30 degrees Celsius to winter lows below minus 10. This freeze-thaw cycle can destroy poorly planned installations.
The foundation is everything. Proper base preparation, including adequate gravel depth and compaction, prevents heaving and settling. In Kashmir, we recommend a minimum 8-inch compacted gravel base for all paver and stone installations.
Material selection matters enormously. Local Kashmiri stone — granite and slate varieties — naturally withstand the climate. Imported materials must be rated for freeze-thaw resistance with a minimum absorption rate below 3%.
Drainage integration is critical. Every hardscape surface must direct water away from structures and into appropriate drainage systems. French drains, channel drains, and permeable paver options all play roles in a comprehensive water management strategy.
