Sustainable Farming Practices in the Kashmir Valley

Kashmir Greenscapes November 10, 2025 7 min read

The Kashmir Valley has practiced sustainable agriculture for centuries, long before the term became mainstream. Terraced farming, crop rotation, and organic composting are deeply embedded in local agricultural traditions.

Today, there is a renewed interest in combining these traditional methods with modern sustainable practices. Vermicomposting, for example, has gained popularity as farmers recognize its ability to enrich soil without chemical inputs.

Water management is critical in Kashmiri agriculture. Traditional irrigation channels, known locally as 'kuls,' have been used for generations. Modern drip irrigation systems now complement these traditional methods, reducing water waste while improving crop yields.

The move toward organic certification is gaining momentum. Kashmir's relatively pristine environment and traditional farming methods make it ideally positioned for organic agriculture. From saffron to walnuts, organic Kashmir products command premium prices in global markets.
